3 tips for a better landlord-tenant relationship

If you’re a tenant and aren’t sure if your landlord actually likes you, it’s a good idea to understand what is and isn’t good behavior from a tenant. By changing a few things, like how you handle problems at the house or reach out to your landlord, you can be a better tenant and get along with your landlord.

Here are just three things you can do to get along better with your landlord. Each one is simple, but they make a big difference.

1. Watch what time it is when you call

If you have to call for an emergency, it’s obviously fine to call at any hour. However, if you’re just calling to let the landlord know about a nonemergency, you should wait until normal business hours, so he or she is likely to be awake and prepared to take your call.

2. Report problems when they come up

The sooner you report a problem, the better. Following the above rules, contact your landlord when something is broken. He or she would rather fix it now than find out that every appliance is broken after you move out.

3. Don’t be late with rent

This should be obvious, but make plans to get your rent turned in on time. Make your rent high priority; don’t buy other things and then ask for an extension for time to pay. Your rent payment isn’t a surprise, so make sure you plan for rent first.

These are a few things to keep in mind when you’re renting that can make your life easier.
