Breaking an apartment lease is easier said than done

As a renter, you hope that you can live up to the terms of your lease without running into any trouble. Unfortunately, you could soon realize that you are unable to do so.

If you need to break an apartment lease, there are a few steps you can take to improve your chance of doing so with the least amount of stress:

  • Read your lease. Doing so will give you a clear idea of what is to happen if you need to break your lease for any reason. For example, you may be required to state your intentions several months in advance.
  • Discuss your situation with your landlord. There is never a good time to break a lease and hope for the best. If you find yourself in this situation, you need to talk to your landlord about your intentions, as they may be willing to consider a buyout of some sort.
  • Held find a new tenant. Rather than put all the work on the landlord, offer to help find a new tenant. This could go a long way in being able to escape your lease without paying any additional money.
